Who We Are

The Henry County Public Health Department provides a variety of services designed to accomplish our mission “Promote physical and mental health and prevent disease, injury and disability.”  This includes community health assessments, lead testing and investigation, communicable disease investigation, school health, health education programs, consultation, flu vaccine administration, and health promotion projects.

What We Do

Henry County Public Health provides leadership, education, advocacy, collaboration, and a unified voice to influence public health policy and practice.

Our Services Include

Adult Health Maintenance Program provides home visits by a registered nurse to persons not eligible through a Medicare certified agency.  This includes medication set-up, health assessments, blood draws for lab tests and other health interventions.

Homemaker/Home Aide Program features home care aides who are specially trained to perform personal care and homemaking in the home.  Aides are supervised by R.N.

Senior Health Program provides health assessment, health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol tests, and health education.  Blood pressure clinics are held in Mt. Pleasant, Salem, New London and Winfield on a monthly basis.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program includes clinical breast exams, pap tests, pelvic exams, mammograms and limited diagnostic tests for individuals who qualify.

Environmental Health Services involves the inspection of private water, waste water and sewage systems, radon test kits and information, food safety information, licensing and inspections.

Immunization Clinics are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 – 4 p.m. and the first Thursday of every month from 1 – 6 p.m.  Vaccinations are administered free of charge for children 0-18 years of age, however, donations are appreciated.

Maternal Child Health Program provides the information and support needed to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby.  Prenatal and post-partum services, including supportive nursing, dental, nutritional, and social services are provided free to anyone who qualifies.  Educational materials are provided free to all mothers.

Child Health Program screening clinics are held in conjunction with Women, Infant, Children Clinics (WIC) the 4th Monday and Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church on Walnut Street.  Services include dental screening, nutrition counseling, social work services, and lead screening.

Lead Screening is an important Public Health service as one out of every seven Iowa children is lead poisoned—three times the national average.  Lead poisoning is usually caused by lead-based paint found in homes built before 1960, about 69% of homes in Iowa.  Lead poisoning is the single most preventable childhood disease.
