The generosity of the Henry County EMS Association made the holiday season brighter for one area family. Cody Dill with HCHC’s Emergency Medical Services approached his fellow EMS colleagues with the idea of an “Adopt a Family” program.
“In about mid-November I approached our director, Dan Walderbach, with the idea of adopting a family during the holidays. Since I’ve been employed here, EMS has not done anything like this. I had participated in something like this six years ago and it really made an impact on me personally. I contacted Community Action of Southeast Iowa that found a family for the EMS Association to adopt,” explained Dill.
“I don’t think we could have gotten a more appropriate family. This was a single parent family with a young son who has a medical condition. We decided as a group to raise money that was spent on gifts and collected small donations from within the community which included a variety of gift certificates and restaurant vouchers. These are things that can create memories for this young man and his mother that otherwise might not have been possible.”
Everything that the EMS Association gathered was dropped off at Community Action on December 21st for the family. When Dill was asked why projects like this are important, his response was simply, “We are our community.”
